CBD oil: What is it and is it legal? It’s now on more store shelves. As buzz over the product increases so are questions.
This may be one of the most identifiable plants for both teenagers and seniors. It’s where Cannibidiol comes from, commonly known as CBD oil. What is CBD oil?
“CBD oil is a compound that can be extracted from the Cannabis Sativa Plant,” said Dr. Karen Pendleton, owner of Pair ‘O Docs Bio-Rejuvenis in Shreveport.
Cannabis Sativa is the formal name for a marijuana plant. Yes, marijuana. The stalk or the stem of the plant is known as the hemp. That’s where the CBD oil comes from. But it‘s most robust in the flowering buds.
“So that [the bud] has CBD, 109 different Cannabinoids, one of them is the THC. It’s got 500 chemicals in it. It’s got oils that are very important. The stalk of the plant really doesn’t produce a lot of the oil,” said oharmacist Doug Boudreaux, who owns one of the nine approved medical marijuana dispensaries in Louisiana.
Hemp CBD also doesn’t contain much THC, and CBD alone is not as effective.
“The combination of all that is really where the magic happens,” said Boudreaux.
Pendleton adds, “The CBD and the THC, they work in conjunction in something called the entourage effect. There are some CBD products that have an elevated amount of THC.”
An elevated amount of THC found in a urine test spells trouble with the law. The 2018 Farm Bill that President Donald Trump signed into effect states that Industrial Hemp should have less than or equal to .3 percent THC.”
And beware because, “A lot of the people who are making the CBD oil are not analyzing the concentrations,” warns Boudreaux.
It’s also important to note if CBD has any side effects or make you feel high. Kay McAdams, who uses it to help her sleep, says, “Not at all. It doesn’t affect you like that at all.”
McAdams and her mom tried CBD oil for the first time about three months ago. “There were just too many people telling me too many good things about it so we had to try it,” she said.
She says her mom’s improvement is remarkable.
”My mom she wasn’t able to bend her hands like this and she started taking CBD oil and after a couple of days she was able to bend her hands like this and now she’s able to have free range of motion,“ McAdams said.
There is strong evidence that CBD oil reduces inflammation and pain, improves sleep quality, stimulates new bone formation and weight loss.
”CBD has an effect on increasing the power house organelle in our cell called the mitochondria to rev up our metabolism and converting white fat into the more metabolically active brown fat,” Pendleton said.
Despite the benefits, Pendleton urges, “One should be a very informed consumer and if you can’t get the information you need to make a good decision, I would suggest aligning yourself with a good practitioner.”
Make sure you only buy from a reputable company that can provide a certificate of analysis or C.O.A.
Pendleton warns: “The bottom line is do your research.”
She adds, “It has no addictive potential or abusive potential at all.”
Plus, it’s been around for centuries dating back some 8,000 to 10,000 years.
But some of the greats either grew and or used industrial hemp and they include Cleopatra, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington.
There’s also strong evidence of CBD oil’s effectiveness for treating epilepsy. But it’s important is to consult a medical professional first.
